Bob Dougherty's love for the art of boatbuilding is so strong, one can only imagine it was born the same day he was, on April 14, 1930. Growing up in 1930's Boston, Dougherty began a love affair with something so capricious and yet so beautiful that it could only be the sea. In 1960, he met Richard T. Fisher and began working for Boston Whaler. Dougherty eventually earned a Senior Vice President position and was responsible for bringing the v-hull to Boston Whaler. Among his many other achievements, he was also responsible for creating Boston Whaler's rapid product development - a business method that, when employed, helps companies grow at exponential levels. It's a method so effective, in fact, that he still practices it today. In 1990, Bob teamed up with his son, and they founded Edgewater Power Boats. It was in 1999 that Bob Dougherty revolutionized the boating industry; he invented and patented the Rapid Molded Core Assembly Process, or RAMCAP. This innovative process earned Dougherty the 1999 NMMA Innovation Award. And that was just the beginning. He, along with his son Stephen, would win the award two more times. For most people, boatbuilding is part art and part science. But if you're Bob Dougherty, it's also part passion. The boats are legendary, but only because they were imagined and designed by a man with such unequivocal virtuosity that he himself could be labeled legendary, too. |
